Martin volunteered for the US Army in 1942, graduating from the 17th class
of the Corp of Engineers, OCS, at Ft. Belvoir VA. He was assigned to the
612th Engineers & after training, embarked on the HMS Queen Mary (used
as troop transport), landing in Scotland in 1943. The 612th Engineers
landed at Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944 & came ashore in
tank-dozers. The 612th participated in 5 major campaigns of the war,
including the Battle of the Bulge. After the defeat of Germany, the
612th was waiting in Marseilles, France to ship to the Pacific for the
war against Japan when the Atom Bomb ended the war. The 612th was
instead sent back to the USA & disbanded. In 1951, Martin was recalled
to active duty and served in Korea. Members of the 612 Engineers have
been meeting annually since it was disbanded. The 55th annual convention
of the 612 Engineers will be in Kansas City, MO. |
