2. Sitting in the center of the U.S.
1 & 2. Near Custer, SD, the
Chief Crazy Horse Memorial is the
largest carving in the world (Mount
Rushmore
would fit in the area behind the head of Crazy Horse).
In
1931, in response to Mount Rushmore,
the memorial was commissioned by Standing
Bear, a Lakota elder,
to be sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski.
Standing
Bear
wanted the world to know that Indians have heros too. Work began in 1935,
but was
stopped for many
years due to lack of funds. Work is now in progress by the Ziolkowski
family.
