South Dakota Trip 1 -
Move
on to South Dakota Trip 2
In
June, we took off for a fun
vacation to The Black Hills of South
Dakota (from '62-'63, while in the Air Force, I was lucky to
have been based at
Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City). We drove all through the beautiful Black
Hills where we visited such fun places as Mount Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Needles
highway, Mammoth Site, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country and Cosmos Mystery
Area. We also ventured out to The Badlands, Deadwood, Tatanka Story of the
Bison, the Geographic Center of the United States in
Belle Fourche and Devil's Tower,
Wyoming. All in all, this was one of our best 'out west' vacations ever
and we plan to go back soon with Ryan's family. |
1. We rented this house in the Black Hills. 2. On our
first day, we drove to The Badlands National Park.
1 & 2.
Ancient mammals
such as rhino, horse and saber-toothed cat once roamed here.
Bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and
black-footed ferrets live here today.
1. With binoculars, Sue (far left) checks out bighorn
sheep on the hillside.
2. Next stop, Ellsworth Air Force Base where I was stationed from 1962 to
1963. |
