We decided to drive to Minnesota for Christmas with
the family. On the way, we stopped at Clear Lake, Iowa to visit the Surf
Ballroom. Clear Lake was the 11th stop of The Winter Dance Party Tour
featuring several top singers. After their performance, Buddy Holly
chartered a plane to take them to Fargo, ND. On that fateful night, soon
after takeoff in poor weather conditions, the plane crashed, killing
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and the
pilot. This became known as "The Day the Music Died". After Clear Lake,
we spent a week with Ryan's family and Alan, who had just moved back to
Minneapolis from Connecticut. |
