Chattooga Rafting 2
The Chattooga River gained
fame with the 1972 movie,
"Deliverance" starring Burt Reynolds, Jon
Voight and Ned Beatty. The Chattooga flows between north
Georgia and South Carolina. In the summer of 2003, Alan, Ryan, Heather, Sue and I rafted
Section 4, the most challenging of the
Chattooga river's 4 sections, with several
Category 4 and 5 rapids. Record rains in Georgia
had the river at
its highest level in over 30 years and the rapids were very
challenging, such that extra guides were posted along the route with
safety ropes and life preservers. Alan flipped right out of our raft on
one of the rapids and was quickly hauled in to safety. Luckily, the
Nantahala Outdoor Center has conducted commercial rafting trips since
1972 with no loss of life. However, many lives have been lost during
unguided trips during the worst of river conditions. |
